What is Tofu?

An Asian food tradition, tofu is a soy protein eaten by vegetarians and non-vegetarians. It’s a low- fat alternative to meats and high in iron. Tofu can be used in almost everything like soups, salads, dishes etc. Tofu is actually the “curd” from the soya bean.

A slice of tofu (2.86 Ounce) contains 13 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, 0.5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, 55% of recommended calcium, 12% of  iron, 20% of selenium, 9% for vitamin B1 and 6% of  folic acid.

The most notable thing about the taste of tofu is that it doesn’t have any particular taste. You can cook tofu many ways. Soft tofu is best for blended foods, mousse, soup, dips. Firm tofu can be cut in strips, cubes or used as a larger slab, a tofu "steak". You can stir fry it, bake it with marinade, broil it. Tofu is great because it absorbs whatever flavors you put on it. You can change the texture by cooking it and by freezing and thawing it.
