Till 1981 Gurgaon was a piece land covered with lush green forests. The story of Industrialization began in 1981 when Maruti Udyog Limited established its first car manufacturing and assembly plant. This was the beginning of automobile revolution in India and soon after when Indian government started it's open door policy, number of automobile companies like Honda, Hero, Hyundai established their assembly plants and in around 5 years the city became automobile manufacturing hub of the country. But this was not the end of revolution here.
Soon in early nineties when business of Information Technology and ITES in India started, Gurgaon was considered as the best place to establish big IT/ITES offices. The presence of airport at distance to 15 KMs and closeness to New Delhi were two factors which made this possible. More over lot of land was available to make big high rise business towers and residential colonies and societies. After twenty years of IT revolution this city today is hub of every activity of business of Information Technology and is known as Millennium City of India. Along with IT industry Gurgaon has established number of US based Investment banking companies and other overseas banks. Gurgaon is corporate headquarter to number of national and international MNCs which have huge workforce to take care of their businesses.
As the industry grew so the residential colonies and societies grew, result of which today is that the reality prices have soared above the limits and right now it is second most expensive city of India after Mumbai. The old property holders who possessed the properties before industrialization, became the richest of the town and can be seen driving big shot cars of the world. These people were farmers who sold their lands to MNCs and big builders such as DLF. DLF is the biggest and oldest builder of Delhi NCR region and owns almost more than half of Gurgaon. DLF Cyber City is the finest series of business towers which have offices of almost every big company like TCS, Accenture, Cognizant, Converges, RBS, PWC, E&Y, Mercer, Serco, Oracle, Cannon, Microsoft, IBM etc..
Provided that there all kind of companies present here in Gurgaon and has a lot of international exposure there are number of international food chains such as Pizza Hut, Mc Donald's, Sub Way, Costa Coffee, KFC etc.. In addition to it there are number of Indian cuisines which offer best of ethnic food. Local street vendors do have lot of things to offer and these vendors are visible outside of every business tower. Momos is the best selling snack here. The way Momos are eaten in Gurgaon it should be made national dish of Gurgaon. Do try one if you visit here.
Gurgaon might be having the maximum number of Shopping malls in India and that to very big ones. Ambience mall is the largest shopping mall of the country and has everything you can think of. Sahara mall is the oldest shopping mall and is still the most frequently visited mall of the city. These malls have all the national and international brands available and features best of multiplexes such as PVR, DT Cinemas and Big Cinemas. These malls are the best hangout places of Gurgaon and best places for those who are looking for eye candies.
The speed with which development has happened in Gurgaon, more emphasis was made on the quantity of construction rather than quality of Infrastructure. By quality it does not mean that the quality of construction is bad but it means that the public and civil infrastructure took back stage in front of construction done for MNCs. The roads are not wide enough to cater to the current traffic of the city; the sewage system is not at all operational- if it rains for 30 minutes the whole city is flooded; water scarcity is at its peek- residents do not have proper supply of water for domestic use; power outages; lack of proper public transportation; high residential rental cost and of course public security is also something which is in scarcity and city is not very safe for late night outings. Had the planning be done before development the city would have been a wonderful place to live in but still professionals from all over India are making this city their home town and becoming part of IT revolution in India.
I am IT professional living in Gurgaon from last 9 years.
